Brief description of the Project First held in 1975, the HKDA Awards has become the premier multi-disciplinary design competition in the Asia-Pacific region. In 2011, with the support and sponsorship of CreateHK and the Hong Kong SAR Government, it became a global competition: the HKDA Global Design Awards (HKDA GDA). The GDA is not only a biennial platform honoring design excellence; it also uses competition as a catalyst for events including seminars, an award ceremony, and exhibitions that bring Hong Kong Design to a global audience, helping establish Hong Kong as a major global creative hub. Good design requires good customers. This year a brand-new award will be introduced for design clients to encourage good business support and promote business collaboration. The "Design Clientele Award" provides an opportunity for designers and clients to showcase and promote the design of innovation. In addition, the awardees will have the opportunity to explore and collaborate with the global design community, such as the Hong Kong Best of the Best seminars held in Zhuhai, Shanghai, Tokyo, Japan and Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The HKDA GDA’s partnerships with government and public entities like Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC), The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) and Hong Kong Design Institute (HKDI) have been vital to reaching a larger audience. The Judges’ Seminars are planned to be held in the prestigious Innovation Tower at PolyU and VTC Auditorium at HKDI, building new connections between emerging designers and PolyU/HKDI students and alumni. 14 and 12 world-class judges served on the jury panel at HKDA GDA2016 and 2018 respectively, attracting thousands of entries from 40 destinations, including USA, the UK, Continental Europe, Australia, Japan, Mainland China, Taiwan and many more worldwide. We look forward to making HKDA GDA 2021 another significant page in the design history of Hong Kong.
